Sandy’s engagement with CRC began through her volunteer work at our Food and Nutrition Center. As a trustee of the Marriott Daughters Foundation alongside her sisters, Sandy’s philanthropy is profoundly shaped by her family’s enduring legacy of service. She shares her passionate commitment to giving back …
“If we all can give a little of our time, and if we can financially help in any way, our community will be stronger and more unified, and we will have the facilities and resources to serve so many more people in need.”

I have been a resident of Encinitas for 27 years. About 15 years ago our church, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, asked for volunteers to come help at the food pantry at CRC once a month. I am always looking for opportunities to serve in the community so I signed up. I loved it from day one. It is so satisfying and rewarding to help others! Sometimes in addition to food, they just need a smile and some positive social interaction. Over time, I have seen improvements in efficiency and organization of the pantry. I have been so impressed with all the additional services CRC provides that I had no idea about. It’s not just a food pantry! They offer domestic violence shelter and prevention programs, counseling, case management and more.
A new and improved and updated CRC will serve our community in such a positive way! No longer will those in need be standing in big lines along the main road in the front of the building. They will have nice waiting areas inside and out. These areas will help preserve their dignity, and the overall environment will surely lift their spirits. This will be a beautiful building that all of us in the community will be proud of.
If we all can give a little of our time, and if we can financially help in any way, our community will be stronger and more unified, and we will have the facilities and resources to serve so many more people in need. After giving from my sisters and my foundation, The Marriott Daughters, my husband and I felt it was important to have our Bertha Family participate as well in the giving.
I have been given so much and have been taught that where much is given, much is expected, AND required. I had wonderful examples of this in my family with my parents, grandparents, and my aunts and uncles. Joy comes from serving others. It’s not just the patrons that walk away feeling good about the experience, it is me too. I leave with a big smile on my face every time!
Honoring Marriott Daughters Foundation and The Bertha Family
In appreciation of their generous contributions, CRC’s new Food and Nutrition Center Reception and Waiting Area will be named in honor of the Marriott Daughters Foundation. Additionally, the Food & Nutrition Center’s refrigeration and food storage areas will be named after Albert and Sandy Bertha in recognition of their support and service to our community.
